General Conference Approves New Union in Ghana: South East Ghana Union Mission to Launch in 2025.
Dr. Solace Asafo

In a landmark decision during its recent Spring Meeting, the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists voted to approve the creation of a new Union within the territory of the Southern Ghana Union Conference. The newly established South East Ghana Union Mission will officially begin operations in late 2025, marking a significant milestone in the Church’s mission expansion across West Africa.
The new Union Mission will be headquartered in Tema, a strategic coastal city in the Greater Accra Region, and will comprise six administrative entities: Meridian Ghana Conference, East Ghana Conference, Diamond Field Ghana Conference, Eastern View Ghana Conference, and the Volta and Oti Ghana Missions. These territories were previously part of the Southern Ghana Union Conference, which has overseen Adventist work across seven regions including Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, and Oti.
Elections to appoint officers and departmental directors for the South East Ghana Union Mission are scheduled to take place from November 5–9, 2025.
This development brings the total number of Unions in Ghana to four, reflecting the dynamic growth of the Adventist Church in the country. The existing Unions include:
- Mid-Ghana Union Conference
- North Central Ghana Union Mission
- Southern Ghana Union Conference
- South East Ghana Union Mission (newly approved)
Church leaders have emphasized that the reorganization is intended to enhance mission effectiveness, foster leadership development, and bring administrative services closer to local congregations. The move follows years of consultation, demographic analysis, and mission field assessments, including progress among the Ewe-speaking communities in the Volta region.
The West-Central Africa Division (WAD), under which Ghana’s Unions operate, continues to prioritize contextualized evangelism, education, and health ministries across its territories. The creation of the South East Ghana Union Mission is expected to accelerate outreach and deepen the Church’s impact in both urban and rural communities.
